I should get an award to being the worst blogger in the world. I haven’t posted in three weeks and I haven’t done a good job at being active on social media. One of the most important parts of being a successful and dependabe blogger is making sure that I provide you guys with consistently awesome material! Well…I am not being consistent at all! But let me give you all of the excuses as to why!
So about three weeks ago my husband and I were leaving our home for an evening out (with the kids) and my hubby noticed there was water in the laundry room. Well that’s strange. There shouldn’t be water on the laundry room floor. So I quickly called my dad to talk me through everything that could be leaking. We realized that the washer wasn’t leaking at all! We pulled away the washing machine and I noticed some brown mud (well it looked like mud) on the back of the wall. I pushed my finger on it and my finger went right through! Say WHAT! How in the world did that even happen? Why did that happen? I began pulling away more of the wall with ease.
(This is behind the washer: The first picture I took to send to my dad as to what was happening. Shortly after we pulled the wall our all the way up!)
We started the washer again to see if we could see the leak (now that the wall was open) and when the water began to drain it was POURING buckets of water behind our wall. We had NO idea what that meant! My brother, cousin and dad came over the figure out if they could figure out what was wrong. They figured out there had to be a clog that we were not noticing. They spent several hours trying to fix the problem, but it really was TOO much for anybody to handle. The next day my husband and I were going to try to fix it ourselves so we took out the washer, the dryer and all of our laminent pergo flooring (that we just put in a few months ago).
My mom told us to call home insurance before we did anything else to have them handle it.
Insurance told us that we would be covered, but we would have to call roter rooter first to take care of the clog. So the next day we called roter rooter to come out and fix the clog. The guy told us that the leak was going to be very far down and he would have to use it 80 foot machine to get the clog. However, he wouldn’t be able to get on our roof because we had a tile roof and our home didn’t have a clean out installed. That night I decided to cut the pipe so there would be an opening.
Our pipe was open for him to be able to clean. I went and started my dishwasher and the vent (that no water is supposed to be) started overflowing with water! So the clog had been affecting our dishwasher and our sink! Gross! Now that we think about it our dishwasher did smell a little (we just thought it was the water). We couldn’t use out dishwasher until the clog was fixed. The roter rooter guy came back the next day and cleaned out the clog. He mentioned that the clog was probably there a really long time which means that the previous owners didn’t know about it either since we only lived her since November 2015. I installed the cleanout so we could clean it in the future if we had to.
We then called our insurance and told them that we took care of the clog and we were ready for them to come and fix it. So about 2 days later an adjuster came out. He took one look at our disaster and he told us that the insurance would probably not fix it (even though they said they would) he said that they only cover it if it had only been leaking for 2 weeks. He said that this was leaking for over a year! So it had been leaking well before we moved in which was in accordance to what the roter rooter guy said too.
We sat in black mold and no washer and dryer for 2 weeks. We had to take all of our laundry over to my parents (we have two toddlers: so we have a lot of laundry) and my mom was amazing and helped us do our laundry! And when I say help…we usually just dropped it off and she did it (she is amazing and I am spoiled).
FINALLY after hassling and emails the insurance came back with a big whopping NO! We were devastated!
We decided we were going to do it ourselves. We are poor and just couldn’t afford to have somebody do it (unless we took out a second mortgage). So we called somebody in our church and asked him if he could come over and show us how to even start this horrible project. He came over and started explaining how to do it. We were actively listening and we were thinking out loud by explaining all of the tools we were going to have to buy for the project. He told us that he was just going to come over and do it because he had all the tools! He is amazing!
He had to tear out our wall and cut out beams under the house as well as the floor.
He told us that this has been happening for YEARS and some of the wood was completely destroyed, so right now we are going after our inspector.
So after nearly a month we are finally on our way to getting our laundry room back! It has been a crazy roller coaster. In the mean time I have been finishing my paper floors in the office and I have been painting my bathroom. Oh and of course taking care of my children who happened to get sick for over a week! And then I have been having the WORST allergies with all of this mold floating around. Our lives are chaotic right now. I am excited to be done with projects for a little while and I am excited to get my laundry room back! Stay tuned for the laundry room reveal as well as a tutorial as to how to repair water damaged floors (since we have learned how!).
I promise that I won’t be a horrible blogger here shortly! I will get back to delivering awesome spaces and beautiful upgrades!
