When my husband and I moved into our fixer-upper home we were very annoyed by all the “junk” left behind! They left tons of wood, garbage, pipes and these ugly concrete cinder blocks. That’s right cinder blocks! I was just about to send them to the dump or put them on “free” on craigslist when I started brainstorming ideas as to how I could use these blocks in a cute and creative way. I decided that I was going to make a cute flower planter in the front of my house!
What you will need: Cinder Blocks
1 can of spray pay per 6 cinder blocks
2 bags of potting soil
flowers for all of the holes that you need to fill (depending on the cinder block design you want)
I got all of the blocks together and put them on an old sheet.
The first thing I did was I had to clean off all of the moss and dirt that accumulated over the years. You want to have the smoothest surface possible! You don’t want to just spray paint over mud, moss or leaves.
I didn’t worry about the inside of the blocks, because I knew that it would just be covered up by dirt.
I painted the majority of the blocks black. I only bought one can of black spray paint. I had white spray paint for another project so I decided to spray the other blocks white. I will use them for another project in the future.
Make sure you are patient (unlike me) and wait until the paint dries. I grabbed the blocks too early and I ended up getting paint all over my hands and arms. Spray paint is very difficult to remove from the skin once it is on. I just was SO excited to start my project! Also make sure that you paint your cinder blocks on some sort of sheet that you don’t care about. I put a sheet down even though we don’t have grass yet, but it WILL ruin your grass (learned the hard way from a previous project)!
The next thing that you will want to do is place your cinder blocks in some sort of design that you like. There are so many options BE CREATIVE! I decided to not be very creative and stack them like this! I felt like it was simple, cute AND I am not in the fear of having it fall over on my toddler.
Speaking of my Toddler…He REALLY thought that he was helping! 🙂
As for my baby…he knew he wasn’t helping!
(This took me a lot longer due to these little guys…but I do EVERYTHING for them! If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be blogging in the first place. They are my world!) Sorry (but not sorry) for that side note: I just love them SO much!
I filled up each hole with potting soil. Some holes will require more soil than other depending on how deep they are.
In goes the flowers! 🙂
The final product! I am so happy with how it turned out! It is so simple and so cute! This is right next to my front patio and so this will be the perfect way to greet people into my home! Onto the next project!
